At the heart of the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026, the Philippines did more than host Southeast Asia’s flagship travel trade event.
It delivered a statement of readiness, resilience and refinement.
Staged at the newly inaugurated Mactan Expo Center, ATF TRAVEX 2026 brought together over 1,500 official delegates, including 11 ASEAN Tourism Ministers, senior officials, tourism boards, global investors, 276 hosted buyers, 363 exhibitors, and regional and international media.
Across three days, more than 7,800 pre-scheduled business meetings were conducted, a clear signal that ASEAN tourism is not only recovering, but accelerating.
Under the theme “Navigating Our Tourism Future, Together,” the Philippines positioned itself as both convener and catalyst of regional collaboration.A Nation Prepared for the Global Stage
With 2,600 square metres of purpose-built exhibition space and integrated meeting facilities, the Mactan Expo Center symbolised a new chapter in Philippine MICE capability.
Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco affirmed:
“The Philippines stands ready to welcome the world — not only as a destination of beauty, but as a partner in progress.”
Evenings unfolded in equally strategic settings. The 35th Excellence Awards of the ASEAN Tourism Association, hosted at JPark Island Resort & Waterpark, gathered nearly 1,000 tourism leaders celebrating innovation, service excellence and sustainability.
ASEANTA President Eddy Krismeidi Soemawilaga underscored the regional ambition:
“The Excellence Awards are more than an annual ceremony. They serve as a benchmark for quality and leadership in ASEAN tourism.”
From airlines to hotels, tour operators to NTOs, winners were recognised across categories celebrating innovation, service excellence, sustainability and leadership—amplifying ASEAN’s collective competitiveness.

The official closing ceremony and ASEAN Tourism Standard Awards took place at the spectacular NUSTAR Resort & Casino, a luxury integrated resort combining high-end retail, premium accommodation and a state-of-the-art convention centre. Modern, sleek, globally aligned. A symbol of the Philippines’ forward-looking hospitality infrastructure.
Culture as Competitive Edge
Every major gathering unfolded like a choreographed spectacle.
Hundreds of dancers and performers animated each ceremony with traditional rituals, tribal choreography and contemporary productions. The Philippines mobilised its artists, designers and creators to project both heritage and modernity.
It was not folklore staged for visitors. It was identity in motion.
From beachfront DJ sets and live bands to curated hosted luncheons by Malaysia and Singapore, networking moments were designed to be immersive, relaxed and memorable—proving that business and emotion are not mutually exclusive.
The opening ceremony at the historic Mactan Shrine transformed diplomacy into a multisensory celebration.
Each of the 11 ASEAN nations showcased signature culinary specialities in a live gastronomic journey, a powerful metaphor for unity in diversity.
Heritage met modernity. Tradition met innovation. It was culture as strategy.

ATF 2026 was not confined to exhibition halls. It extended into landscapes, communities and lived experiences.
The Tourism Promotions Board Philippines curated a portfolio of carefully designed pre- and post-tours transforming hosted buyers and media into long-term ambassadors of the destination.
Each programme revealed a distinct dimension of the Philippines:
Clark, Pampanga & Manila - Positioned Clark as an emerging sustainable leisure and sports hub, seamlessly connected to Manila’s cultural depth and urban lifestyle energy.
Bohol - Showcased how an island destination can successfully integrate ecological preservation with cultural heritage — reinforcing its model of sustainable tourism.
Davao - Presented Mindanao’s gateway to biodiversity, culture and investment opportunity, under the powerful message: “Diversity is Our Beauty.”
Dumaguete & Siquijor - Offered coastal charm and wellness-driven experiences, blending relaxation with authenticity.
Coron, Palawan - Demonstrated its leadership as a premier dive destination committed to marine conservation and sustainable luxury tourism.
El Nido, Palawan - Reinforced its positioning in the global market as a benchmark for environmentally responsible, high-end island tourism.
These journeys were not optional add-ons. They were strategic extensions of the forum proving that the Philippines can deliver both high-level business events and emotionally transformative incentive travel experiences.
Yet one destination captivated with particular intensity.
Davao: Where Diversity Becomes Destiny

If one post-tour redefined experiential tourism, it was Davao.
Located in Mindanao and spanning 2,444 sq. km, Davao City is the largest city in the Philippines by land area, larger than Metro Manila, several times the size of Cebu, and even surpassing Singapore in territorial scale.
With around 2 million inhabitants, Davao blends urban ambition with biodiversity and cultural depth.
At the Philippine Eagle Center, delegates encountered the critically endangered Philippine Eagle, the “King of Birds.” In the distance rises Mount Apo, the country’s highest peak, often called the “King of Mountains.” Nearby blooms the rare Waling-Waling orchid, the “Queen of Flowers.”
Symbolism matters here. Davao embraces it.

Hosted delegates immersed themselves in cacao and coffee journeys, from harvesting fruit to roasting, grinding and tasting. They planted trees in their own names. They crafted chocolate by hand. They tasted durian, the famed “King of Fruits,” transforming curiosity into delight.

At Eden Nature Park, adrenaline met panorama—sky biking and zipline experiences overlooking endless green landscapes.
On Samal Island, the Giant Clam Sanctuary protects over 3,700 giant clams, including Tridacna gigas, a reminder that sustainability is not rhetoric here, but practice.

Davao also promotes golf tourism (14 courses), Japanese heritage trails reflecting its pre-war “Little Tokyo” identity, pottery workshops, market immersions, and eleven annual festivals—most notably the Kadayawan Festival, celebrating 11 indigenous ethnolinguistic tribes.

Safety, Sustainability and Investment
Davao ranks among the top cities in Southeast Asia for safety in 2025 and positions itself as open for tourism, partnership and investment. Priority sectors include agribusiness, tourism, technology, eco-industries, education and health—supported by fiscal incentives such as business tax exemptions and property tax incentives.
Infrastructure continues to evolve, including a four-lane bridge linking Davao City to Samal Island and a growing fleet of electric public buses supporting environmental goals. Mayor Sebastian Duterte affirmed:
“Davao is open for tourism, for partnerships and for investment. Safety is not about statistics — it is a way of life.”

The Philippine Advantage: Love as Strategy
Yet beyond infrastructure, rankings and investment metrics, ATF TRAVEX 2026 revealed something deeper.
The Tourism Promotions Board describes Philippine tourism as a “Work of Heart”, a philosophy rooted in resilience and in the warmth of the Filipino people.
Throughout the forum, delegates were welcomed not only with efficiency but with sincerity. Gifts offered with intention. Smiles that disarm. Performances that move. Conversations that linger beyond contracts.
“Mabuhay” is not merely a greeting.
It is an invitation to belong.
In the Philippines, tourism is not transactional.
It is relational.
ATF TRAVEX 2026 demonstrated that the country’s competitive advantage lies not only in natural beauty or modern infrastructure, but in its ability to transform every destination into a deeply human experience.
As the baton passes to Singapore for ATF 2027, the Philippines leaves behind more than contracts signed and partnerships formed.
It leaves a feeling.
And in tourism, as in life, feeling is what endures.
Mabuhay.
A special thanks to the Tourism Promotions Board Philippines (TPB) for their outstanding professionalism, seamless coordination and warm hospitality throughout the forum. ( Rica - Nic - Ricky - Tina...)
