At TRAVEX 2026, Timor-Leste stepped confidently onto the ASEAN tourism stage. Represented by Mr. Antonio da Silva, Director General for Tourism, the country presented itself not just as a destination, but as a story in motion: a young nation with vast potential, embracing authenticity while opening its doors to the global tourism market.
Timor-Leste’s vision: sustainable, authentic tourism designed for high-value visitors rather than mass tourism.
A Hidden Gem in the Coral TriangleTimor-Leste is strategically located within the Coral Triangle, boasting over 1,000 fish species and vibrant marine biodiversity, including critical habitats on Atauro Island. On land, the country is equally rich: over 2,000 flora and fauna species, pristine rivers, and the majestic Mount Ramelau, reaching nearly 3,000 meters. Its landscapes vary from rolling plains to rugged mountains, with untouched natural beauty that remains largely undiscovered.

Culture and Heritage
Timor-Leste’s culture blends indigenous traditions with Portuguese and Catholic influences, preserved for over a century. Visitors can experience local life through traditional villages, artisan communities, and, of course, its world-renowned Timor coffee, produced organically and sustainably.
Sustainable Tourism at the Core

As a new ASEAN member, Timor-Leste is committed to sustainable tourism. The government prioritizes community-based initiatives, ensuring that tourism benefits local populations directly. By 2030, the goal is to host around 200,000 high-value visitors annually, a modest number reflecting the country’s size but designed to protect its natural and cultural assets.
Connectivity and Infrastructure
Timor-Leste is improving its connectivity and facilities to support tourism growth:Flights: 31 weekly flights from Bali, daily connections from Darwin, and new routes from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and soon China.
Airports: Modernization projects, supported by Australia and Japan, will expand international airport capacity to 1 million passengers annually by 2028.
Cruise Tourism: The port of Dili is a growing hub for repositioning cruises from Australia, offering easy access to city attractions within 10 km of the port.
Accommodation: Over 2,000 hotel rooms nationwide, with new boutique hotels and luxury resorts planned for the coming years.

Investment Opportunities
Timor-Leste is a US dollar economy with a business-friendly environment. Tourism investors benefit from tax holidays, profit repatriation guarantees, streamlined procedures, and access to the region’s largest free trade area. Priority areas include luxury resorts, marine infrastructure, integrated tourism developments, and support services for high-value travelers.
A Vision for the Future “Tourism is not just about travel, It is a driver for economic diversification, a means to empower communities, and a way to share our heritage with the world. Timor-Leste is authentic, resilient, and ready for visionary partners who see beyond business as usual.
Mr. Da Silva emphasized.
Welcome to Timor, a land of untamed opportunities and unlimited potential.
