Abu Dhabi will be home to a mega week of motorsport action as it prepares to host the FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) finale at Etihad Arena—another first for the Middle East, further strengthening the emirate's position as a leading sports and entertainment venue.
The staging of the last WSX race of the 2024 calendar on Wednesday 4th December takes place just before Yas Island hosts the season-ending Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th December at Yas Marina Circuit, with the city set to attract visitors from across the globe for the two motorsport extravaganzas.
WSX returns to the UAE capital after its successful debut in 2023 – the championship's first ever Middle East event – that saw riders wow thousands of spectators with their stunning skills on the unique purpose-built track inside Etihad Arena. In 2024, Abu Dhabi will host another WSX first – the thrilling season finale – and fans can expect a bigger and better experience as 32 riders battle for the chance to be crowned WSX and SX2 champions.
Abu Dhabi brings the 2024 WSX calendar to a close after stops in Vancouver and Perth with the elite motorsport competition joining an impressive list of sporting events that have been held in the UAE capital.
As venue operators of Etihad Arena, Ethara's hosting of WSX aligns with the Abu Dhabi's efforts to stimulate economic growth and diversification with a strong entertainment and sporting event proposition.
Ali Al Beshr, Motorsport Development Executive Director at Ethara, said
The FIM World Supercross Championship is the pinnacle supercross event and to be selected as the host for its final round signifies how highly rated Abu Dhabi is as a global sporting destination. At Ethara, a fundamental part of our work is to create memorable experiences for both young and old from all over the world by hosting some of the most popular high-profile events. The WSX finale falls into that category and will showcase the best of what supercross has to offer.
More importantly, this year's staging will allow fans to witness two elite motorsport events in the same week. With the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix also taking place at Yas Marina Circuit, Yas Island will be at the centre of the global motorsport landscape in the first week of December, further solidifying its position as a world-leading sports tourism destination. We look forward to welcoming the fans to enjoy the city's offerings and be part of what promises to be a memorable five days.
WSX CEO, Tom Burwell, said
We could not have asked for a better location than Yas Island's Etihad Arena to host the WSX finale next month. It is a venue that has a rich history of staging some of the biggest events in the world with the NBA, UFC and World Tennis League just some of the brands to visit the Arena, so it is apt to be returning - especially after its fantastic debut last year.
It also extends our partnership with Ethara, who share the same goal as us in delivering unforgettable moments and were instrumental to last year's success. With the WSX established as a flagship global motorsport event, attracting the very best supercross riders, it is an opportunity for fans to witness the high-octane action up close in what promises to be a thrilling end to our entertaining season.
